This blog is about exploration. That’s the main theme and along those lines, I’ve broken this niche up into six main categories that illustrate my main passions in life: writing, art, identity and society, travel, history, and spirituality.
As a writer, I don’t believe there is such a thing as perfection, but it’s something I’m always striving for. I’ve been ‘writing the story’ since I was old enough to pick up a pencil and writing is something that goes beyond interest to me. It’s in my blood. It’s how I express myself, it’s how I live. I’m always growing as a writer and I want to help other writers reach their potential. To do that, I want to talk about my own journey as a writer, from my published works to this blog itself.
Art has always been another interest of mine though my desire to get more into it, and into Graphic Design, in particular, has only recently been realized. I’m self-taught in the Adobe creative suites and I would consider myself still a very elementary beginner even though I have been using Photoshop for years. I have taught and am still teaching myself the ins and outs of color theory, typography, and page layout. I learn by trial and error and I am always finding out new tricks to make my designs stand out. It’s only recently that I have begun to call myself a ‘freelance designer’ and I want to share everything that I learn through this learning process with anyone else who is self-taught. I feel like the best way to learn is to teach others. I am just beginning to build my portfolio and I want to take you on that journey with me.
Identity is another part of who I am and while I tend to distance myself from the stigma associated with labels, I do use them at their basic level. As this part may become heated and controversial at times, my aim is to illustrate what the labels I use in my own life mean to me and how they affect me. I always try to maintain a logical, reasonable approach to this highly charged topic and it’s my belief that while I may not claim all labels for my own, I do respect them and I am a strong believer in unbiased equality for ALL labels and identities. It’s my greatest belief that our differences should be embraced while our similarities should be shared. I adhere to certain identities when it comes to ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, and lifestyle, and I will talk about all of those and what they mean to me, but my most important identity is being an Aspie. It’s my wish that people will begin to see Asperger’s and Autism Spectrum Disorder not as a disease or a disability but as an identity. To me, it isn’t something I suffer from, it’s part of who I am.
A secondary part of my identity is my spirituality. I like to say spirituality as opposed to religion because I believe that I am connected to the spirit world, I am a part of it. Officially, I use the term Eclectic Omniestic Pagan to describe myself. It means that I am on my own personal path independent of anyone else’s. I don’t believe that religion or spirituality is a one size fits all thing and I don’t believe that there is such thing as an ultimate correct path. The path is ever changing, but it is your path and it is personal to you. I want to share my thoughts and believes as a pagan and as someone who has explored some other beliefs and has ‘tacked on’ some of those beliefs as I have gone. But even as I share these things, I want to say that it goes against my deepest belief to try to convert, pressure, or impose my belief on anyone’s free will. A person’s free will is their most sacred space and I would never violate it by imposing my views on them.
I hold a bachelor’s degree in history from San Francisco State. I have a passion for the past and I’ve always believed that in order to look to the future you must also remember your past. Officially, my focus was colonialism, genocide studies, and recent European history, but unofficially, my learning still continues and my interest lies in any period of history where there was war, revolution, oppression, persecution, or natural disaster. And as such, my area of interest extends to the science of Earth History, paleontology, and astronomy, as I believe that the origins of the Earth and the Universe, as well as their future, is important to understand as well.
And last but certainly not least, the other aspect of this blog will be about travel. I caught the wander bug very early in life. Even as a little girl, I’ve dreamed about exploring the world. My traveling experience is very limited because of finances, but it’s always evolving. Every time I explore something new, I’d like to share it will you.
So that is what you can expect from this blog. Exploration. Exploration of Humanity, nature, identity, passions, emotions, and everything in between. I hope you will get a lot out of it and I hope my blog can inspire others to reach their greatest potential.
